We wrap up our Thanos vs. Darkseid series by watching the series finale of Superman: the Animated Series, “Legacy.” In these episodes, Darkseid brainwashes Superman into doing his bidding in an attempt to invade Earth. We talk about Darkseid as a character, the show’s metaphor for the eternal struggle between good & evil, and the challenges of fitting a story this big into an episode this short. It’s Darkseid’s turn in our Thanos vs. Darkseid competition as we read “JLA: Rock of Ages” by Grant Morrison. This Justice League “classic” from the 90’s flings some of our favorite heroes all over the time stream and lands them in a dystopian future where Darkseid has conquered the earth. But hey, it’s not easy writing a book full of so many characters and just tossing in more Deus ex Machina machines than you can shake a stick at won’t solve the problem even though old superheroes are the best superheroes. Our “DC Let Downs” series concludes with one of the most lauded comics of all time, “Final Crisis” by Grant Morrison. This 7-issue comic is the end play of the incredibly long build-up that spanned multiple DCU-wide events. We talk about all the narrative problems, the character problems, and the WTF problems because, really, none of the good ideas from this comic had any room to shine through a cloud of anti-life haze.
