224 – Secret War

Secret War

We wrap up our Secret War series with something that has absolutely nothing to do with The Beyonder, “Secret War” by Brian Michael Bendis. In this five-issue miniseries, Nick Fury takes a group of heroes and wages a secret war against the elected prime minister of Latveria. We try to puzzle together just what Fury’s plan might have been, but in the end we just can’t make sense of the plot of this story. Plus, we talk about the DC cinematic movie trailers that came out of SDCC and we play Quotes. To support the show, go to www.Patreon.com/WelcometoComics. 223 – Secret Wars II

Secret Wars II

We get a pleasant surprise when we read “Secret Wars II” by Jim Shooter. This sequel to the 12-issue actionfest is surprisingly quirky, fun, and philosophical. Through nine issues, the Beyonder becomes physical, tries & fails to learn what it means to exist among humans, and finally forces mortality upon himself. Throughout the whole endeavor, nobody is really in any position to stop him. We talk about the wooing of Dazzler, the troubles in writing omniscience, and the insane things that were once continuity. Plus, we play Quotes! For more info on past shows, go to www.WelcometoComics.com. Support the show over at www.patreon.com/WelcometoComics. Next week: “Secret War” By Brian Michael Bendis!

222 – Secret Wars

Secret Wars

We’re doing a three-episode special on Marvel’s classic Beyonder event series by reading “Secret Wars” by Jim Shooter. We break into this classic comic and all the way it just doesn’t seem to hold up. There’s all kinds of things here that throw up weird alarm bells, from Wasp’s flippant nail obsession to Colossus’ creepy doting of a woman he just met. Aside from a quirky/cute romance between two random old school characters, there’s just not much here anymore. Plus, we rationalize our decision to not go to SDCC.
