233 – Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin: Activation

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin: Activation

We start off our long-awaited Gundam series by reading “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin: Activation” by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. In this manga retelling of the original 1979 story that start Japan’s Gundam craze almost 30 years ago, young Amuro accidentally takes control of a prototype mobile suit and repels a recon force from his home, Side 7. We talk about our exposure to gundams in our younger days as well as the awesome action and sparse character development in this manga. Plus, it’s the return of Fight Night!. Apologies to everyone for the wonky audio quality this week. To hear more, go to www.WelcometoComics.com or become a patron today at www.patreon.com/welcometocomics. Next week: “Gundam Build Fighters,” the anime!

232 – Comic Book Art

Comic Book Art

We take a break from our regular weekly comic discussion to give you a primer on comic book art. Aside from throwing out and describing some basic terminology, we bring up our favorite artists and discuss panels and styles that stuck with us years after reading them. We don’t go super in depth, but we hope you can use this episode to get some groundwork on how to evaluate good art and what kinds of details to look for when you’re actively reading a comic. Plus, we banter for a bit about the local convention scene. For more info on past or upcoming shows, visit www.WelcometoComics.com or become a patron today over at www.Patreon.com/WelcometoComics. Next week: “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 1: Activation” by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko.

231 – Black Canary & Zatanna: Bloodspell

Black Canary & Zatanna: Bloodspell

It’s out last episode in the Gotham Ladies series and we’re taking on the Fishnet Friends with “Black Canary & Zatanna: Bloodspell” by Paul Dini. In this comic, we see how the two friends meet and then catch up with them later in life as one of Canary’s past busts catches up with her. We talk about the rarity of non-sexual friendships in comic book fandom, praise the great facework done throughout this comic, and answer some of the criticisms this comic met when it first came out. Plus, we banter about local conventions and declare a winner for Quotes!
